Built during the beginning of the Cold War in the 1950's, the B-47E Stratojet mission was to drop bombs on Soviet Russia. Luckily, the majestic Stratojet never executed her intended mission. Her mission during the 1960s changed into the less violent as the Stratojet served as a photoreconnaissance aircraft—over-flights of Soviet territories, electronic intelligence, and weather observation. Her sleek, super aerodynamic skin, made the B-47E descend quickly, so drag chutes and stronger landing gear were necessary. The B-47E Stratojet was the first mass-produced strategic bomber to have anti-skid brakes. The Boeing B-47C, and B-47D versions were never manufactured, so the definitive version of the model is the Boeing B-47E. The final Boeing B-47E had jet-assisted-take-off, stronger landing gear and an anti-skid breaking system. She was finally retired from active service by the US Air Force in 1977.
