The Bell P-59 Airacomet was the first fighter aircraft built by American starting in 1942. Unfortunately its performance was matched by the top piston powered jet fighters that were already available and forever known as a poor performer. It never saw combat and production was halted before half of the 80 planes were produced. It was powered by a set of twin General Electric powerplants that pushed this jet to speeds of only 413 mph. The engines were also a problem being unreliable in its test flights. The most positive thing about the P-59 is that it was the platform on which all other US jet aircraft were made.
