Dubbed the “Fork-tailed Devil” by the Luftwaffe, the P-38 Lightning airplane was Lockheed’s answer to US Army Air Corps’ (USAAC) February 1937 specification, which was considered as the toughest set of specifications the department had presented to that date. The result was a unique fighter aircraft with twin booms and a central nacelle (for the pilot and armament. Aside from being successful in carrying out various roles like dive and level bombing, photoreconnaissance, and ground attack missions, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning also held the distinction of being the first American fighter that used aluminum skin panels. As the first fighter capable of flying faster than 400 mph (640 km/h), the P-38 aircraft also prided itself in being the only American fighter aircraft in production during America’s war involvement.
