Product Details

Development of the DC-3 began in 1934 when American Airlines president C.R. Smith sought for a plane longer than the DC-2. The reason for this was, of course, better passenger capacity and accommodation which translates to larger profits. In response to this, Douglas Aircraft developed the first design of the DC-3 which was the Douglas Skysleeper Transport. Despite being the first unit of the series, the Skysleeper was relatively luxurious and can already accommodate 14 overnight passenger flights. The plane was delivered in June 1936. The first actual DC-3 transport aircraft followed two months after. Looking favorably upon the aircraft, C.R. Smith said the Douglas DC-3 was a plane that could haul passengers and make money. Thus by 1939, it is no wonder why 90% of American airline passengers were the DC-2 and the DC-3. The plane was powered by two 1,200hp Wright Cyclone radial engines.

This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. Perfect as a gift for any aviation enthusiast and history buff!
