The C-141 Starlifter was the first US jet-powered airliner. In its service of more than 40 years, the Hanoi Taxi had gone through several important missions—the most notable of which was its repatriation of the American prisoners of war in Vietnam. The C-141 plane with serial number 66-0177 made history during the Operation Homecoming toward the end of the Vietnam War, but this aircraft had also undertaken other equally important missions. In 2005, the Starlifter became an integral part of the medical evacuation mission when the deadly Hurricane Katrina devastated several states. In addition, the Hanoi Taxi delivered humanitarian relief, fuel, and medical shipments all over the world. Shortly after the announcement of its retirement, the Hanoi Taxi took its final flight, this time with Vietnam War veterans onboard. This concluding episode gave the veterans the opportunity to fly one more time. On May 6, 2006, the C-141 retired from service. It can now be seen at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
