Product Details

Quite interestingly, the development of the F117 Nighthawk was mostly done in secret - true to its trademark black jet appearance. Design and modifications were considered as a black project by Lockheed during the early stages. But records point out that development began during the mid-1970s when Lockheed’s analyst Denys Overholser tried to employ Soviet mathematician Pyotr Ufimtsev’s radar theories into a plane design. With better technology, achieving such a feat seemed possible at that time; and so Lockheed began its Hopeless Diamond project in 1975. When the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency learned about the project, it expressed its support and contracted Lockheed to build two prototypes of this stealth fighter under the codename “Have Blue”. These demo planes first flew on December 1977 and showed that a stealth plane is indeed possible. Hence, the US government increased its funding for the project and initiated the Senior Trend project, which saw the construction of the Lockheed F117A. The first prototype, the YF-117A, was first flown on June 1981 and official production began a year later. And, quite as expected, the aircraft was widely employed thanks to its breakthrough technology.

This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. Perfect as a gift for any aviation enthusiast and history buff!
