The North American F-100 Super Sabre was a more advanced version of the F-86 Sabre aircraft - something that the word “Super” summarizes. The first prototype of the F-100, designated as the YF-100A, was first flown in May 1953. Before long, the aircraft proved worthy of the word “Super” by being the first aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound. It flew at an incredible speed of 760mph. The F-100D variant, in particular, was introduced three years later in January 1956. It was eventually powered by a Pratt & Whitney J57-P-21 engine that gave it a maximum speed of 926.6mph, belittling the 760mph record. In addition, the F-100D Super Sabre had a range of 1,970 miles and a maximum climb of 55,000ft. But the plane wasn’t just all speed. Super Sabre had an incredible selection of weaponry, which included four 20mm M-29 cannons, four GAR-8 sidewinders, two GAM-83A missiles, and a bombload capacity of 7,040lbs. Out of the total estimate of 2,300 F-100s built by North American Aviation, more than half were F-100Ds (at about 1,280).
