During the Berlin Airlift in West Germany, the US Air Force C-47 Skytrain used the C-47 Skytrain as part of their 86th Tactical Fighter Wing. The military transport aircraft came about as a response to the American Airlines need for a larger version of the DC-2, a twin-engine airliner with the capability to carry 14 passengers. The C-47 aircraft was famously utilized to transport 7,000 pounds of candy into the Tempelhof airport, a US sector of Berlin, thus earning the moniker “Camel Caravan”. Along with the candy came “Clarence,” a baby camel that stood as the mascot of the 525th Fighter Squadron. Done as a gesture of goodwill, the C-47 Skytrain and the candy were presented to the children of Berlin during the Christmas season. The aircraft served the US Air Force Strategic Air Command from 1946 to 1967.
