The AGM-114 Hellfire is an air-to-surface missile developed by Lockheed Martin in 1974 as a “tank buster”. This precision-strike missile can easily take out heavily armored targets. It was originally named Helicopter Launched, Fire and Forget Missile before the acronym Hellfire was widely used. As the Apache helicopter’s primary weapon, the Hellfire is considered an aircraft by itself, with its own guidance computer and steering controls. The first guided launch of a Hellfire missile was in 1978 from an AH-1G Cobra helicopter.
