Product Details

This limited edition 1/500 Scale model of the Hindenburg includes an actual relic recovered from the wreck site at the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst New Jersey. The photo on the certificate of authenticity includes the entire piece that was recovered by Cheif Willian A. Buckley of the USN and given to Robert W Jeffery. The Hindenburg was a large German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, designed by the Zeppelin Company. It was the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume. The airship flew from March 1936 until destroyed by fire 14 months later. The Hindenburg disaster took place on Thursday, May 6, 1937, as the German passenger airship caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. Of the 97 people on board (36 passengers, 61 crew), there were 35 fatalities. The actual cause of the fire remains unknown, although a variety of hypotheses have been put forward for both the cause of ignition and the initial fuel for the ensuing fire. The incident shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the end of the airship era.
