Mastercraft Collection: C-47A Skytrain Honey Bun III..
Wingspan: 12 inches
Length: 7.9 inches
Evolving from the DC-3 civilian transport plane, the C-47 Skytrain was refitted with a stronger floor to accommodate military functions. The plane was powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90C twin wasp radial engines with 1,200hp each. It had a maximum speed of 224mph, a top range of 1,391 nautical miles, and a service ceiling of 26,400ft. When it entered military service, the C-47 aircraft functioned primarily as a transport plane for cargo and troops. It is estimated that about 5,400 C-47s were produced to cater to US needs; and each of these definitely performed. It was the C-47 plane that flew during the Guadalcanal operations against the Japanese forces, that airlifted to support the US during the Battle of Bastogne. During its lifespan, the plane took on quite a handful of nicknames including: Dakota or DACoTA (Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft) and Gooney Bird.
