Mastercraft Collection: P-38 Lightning Pudgy..
Wingspan: 12.5 inches
Length: 9.25 inches
Considered one of the most sophisticated aircraft during its time, the P-38 Lightning fulfilled the military’s need for a high-speed, long-range aircraft with excellent climb capabilities. This aircraft, nicknamed the “fork-tailed devil” by the Germans, features a twin-boom design that’s staggeringly different from the usual design of military aircraft during the early 1940s. Armed with .50-cal. machine guns and a 20mm cannon, the P38 Lightning plane performed a variety of missions, which include dive bombing, long-range escort, and photoreconnaissance. Legendary aircraft designer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson took the helm in creating the aircraft’s design. The P-38 Lightning Pudgy was best known for its huge participation in the Pacific theater. During World War II, the P38 “Pudgy” made Thomas McGuire the second highest-scoring ace during the war. The P38 remained USAAF’s standard aircraft long until the end of the Second World War II.
