Wingspan: 8.25 inches
Length: 12.5 inches
The F-117 Nighthawk is recognized as the world's first operational aircraft with low-observable stealth technology. It was powered by two GE F404 turbofan engines, and was equipped with that timeÕs most advanced navigation system and avionics. Contract for development was awarded to Lockheed in 1978, and the first unit was first flown in 1981 and the plane officially rolled out of the factory a year later. The aircraft became most synonymous to the 8th and 9th Fighter Squadrons, two of the many squadrons that employed the Nighthawk. Through the Black Sheep and Flying Knights squads, the F-117A saw numerous battles - the first of which was the 1989 Operation Just Cause in Panama. Probably one of the most noteworthy anecdotes of the aircraft was its participation in the Operation Desert Storm in 1991; it can very well be said that the Nighthawk commanded this battle. Even though only 36 F-117As were in action, the Nighthawk squadrons conducted more than 1,250 sorties throughout the operation. That meant that the plane dropped at least 2,000 tons of bombs and flew for at least 6,900 hours. The aircraftÕs stealth capability and sophisticated technology was well optimized during this time, making the plane the eventÕs determiner.
