World Record holder, lethal and large, the McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II was the main fighter for US Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force during the Vietnam War. Ace Pilots of the Vietnam War scored five aerial kills against enemy fighter aircraft in air-to-air combat. The F-4 Phantom was originally developed for US Navy aviators. However, based from the aircraftÕs widespread use in Laos and South Vietnam, it was soon proven that the Phantoms were versatile fighters, and excellent ground support bombers. The Phantom aircraft was then sent to the Persian Gulf War and Southwest Asia conflicts. Another thing worth mentioning is that the F-4 Phantom is the only aircraft used by both the US Air Force Thunderbirds and the US Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration teams. Powerful thrust and potent throttle enabled pilots to out-maneuver their opponents and attack at supersonic speeds--thatÕs 1,472 miles per hour. Despite its massive size and armament, the Phantom II climbed at 41,300 feet per minute. Massive, dangerous and quick, the Phantom aircraft earned several nicknames throughout its life, the ÒFlying AnvilÓ, "Rhino" and "Big Iron Sled" are just a few of its famous monikers.
