Known to the west as the Vigorous Dragon, the J-10 plane was originally designed for air-superiority role. It was later on revised to become an all-weather aircraft. The whole project was kept secret that its first photos came out only after 3-4 years after its maiden flight in 1998. It was in 2004 when this Chengdu aircraft entered service with Chinese air force, but it wasnÕt revealed to the public until 2006. At present, there are 240 flight-worthy J-10 Chengdu aircrafts serving the PeopleÕs Liberation Army Air Force and PeopleÕs Liberation Army Naval Air Force. Capable of flying at Mach 2.2 speeds, the J-10 is at par with its western counterparts in terms of performance.
