The X-36 is a tailless research aircraft developed by NASA and McDonnell Douglas. It was a prototype jet that significantly and dramatically changed the landscape for future stealth fighters. It utilized new split ailerons in lieu of vertical or horizontal tails to provide yaw and pitch directional control. This one-of-a-kind, innovative design promised reduced weight, drag, and radar signature—plus increased range, maneuverability, and survivability—for future fighter aircraft. The main design feature of the X-36 was stealth and agility, allowing for a very agile and highly maneuverable fighter aircraft. It successfully completed a 31-flight research program within a 25-week period at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in 1997. The X-36 was used to demonstrate the feasibility of the tailless aircraft design; it went on to exceed all project goals.
