Chuck Yeager was a fighter pilot who flew the P-51 Mustang aircraft during the Second World War. Yeager’s first taste of combat came in February 1944, where he shot down one Me 109 before being shot down himself over France on his eighth combat mission. He evaded capture with the help of the French underground, but forced his way back into combat and earned an “ace in a day” by gunning down five German planes in one mission. Chuck Yeager led the very first aerospace school for pilots and was the first American ever to fly a Soviet Mig-15.
