The ME-262 Messerschmitt aircraft was a pre-World War II and the world’s very first operational aircraft that was powered by jet engines. First production of the ME 262 jet was in 1944 by a German aircraft company, the Messerschmitt. The ME Messerschmitt is nicknamed “Schwalbe” or in English, “Swallow”. The ME 262 jet was a very effective fighter aircraft that was utilized as light-bomber and even reconnaissance. The ME 262 was manned a single crew, the pilot and powered by twin turbojet engines. It was armed with an assortment of cannons, rockets and bombs and can fly at a maximum speed of 559mph.
