The C-54 Skymaster is a military transport aircraft used by the United States Army Air Force during the World War II and Korean War. This C-54 plane’s design was inspired by the civilian airliner Douglas DC-4. In addition to its role in transporting cargo, the Skymaster was also the transport of choice of US government officials. Dubbed as Air Force One, the Skymaster had the distinction of transporting the President of the United States. Other non-combat roles of the aircraft include military and scientific research, air-sea rescue, and tracking. In the late 1940s, several Skymasters were used in delivering food and coal supplies to West Berlin during the Berlin Blockade (Berlin Airlift).
