Designed after the Messerschmitt P. 1101 airplane, the Bell X-5 was the first aircraft in the world to have the capability of varying the sweepback of its wings in flight. This was the major difference of the Bell X-5 from the Messerschmitt P. 1101, the latter could only vary its sweep while on the ground. It was a proof of concept, the main reason for designing and developing the Bell X-5 was to prove that a higher maximum speed could be achieved by increasing the sweepback of an airplane's wings after takeoff. This while retaining low takeoff and landing speed and higher rate of climb with the wings swept forward. It was the first aircraft to utilize in-flight variable geometry wings. The program that produced the X-5 was also being considered for an American/NATO low-cost tactical fighter initiative.
