Sikorsky S-42 was a product of a better version of the S-40 series, the American flagship. While the S-40 served to be Pan AM’s commercial flying boat since it was delivered on October 1931, Russian-American aircraft designer Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky and Pan Am consultant Charles Lindbergh planned to have an improved performing “Flying Clipper”. One of the requirements for the aircraft was a longer range to fly across the globe and a higher payload. Sikorsky and Lindbergh discussed the development and made fundamental sketches of their ideas on the back of the menu at the ship’s lounge. Vought-Sikorsky exclusively manufactured ten S-42 “Sikorsky Clippers” to Pan American World Airways. This cargo aircraft with wing markings of NC-16734 was S-42B variant that was produced with improved aerodynamics and constant speed propellers supplied from Hamilton Standard. On January 1938, this mail flight plane, nicknamed "Samoan Clipper", made its 1st delivery from New Zealand to Hawaii.
