The SBD-5 was the most produced variant of the Douglas SBD Dauntless series, which was based on the Northrop BT-2 design. The earliest versions of the series, the SBD-1 and the SBD-2, were requested and employed by the US Marine Corps and the US Navy, respectively. Though the aircraft entered service between 1940 and 1941, Douglas Aircraft continued to modify the design. As such, the later variants emerged. The SBD-5 Dauntless, in particular, was powered by a 1,200hp Wright R-1820-60 radial engine. It had a maximum speed of 255mph, a top range of 970 nautical miles, and a climb rate of 1,700 ft. per minute. Its weaponry was two 12.7mm Browning M2 machine guns in front and two 7.62mm flexible-mounted Browning machine guns at the back. The aircraft can also carry about 2,250lbs of bombs.
