Not all aircraft that deemed to be a failure at the onset turn out to be actual letdowns. Case in point is BellŐs P-39 Airacobra. This fighter plane was developed at the beginning of World War II, but it didnŐt succeed in its role as a high-performance fighter. Yet, the Airacobra proved to be a fierce combatant when it comes to low-level attacks. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, several P-39 flew to the Pacific to combat the equally, if not more, powerful Mitsubishi A6M Zero planes. Demonstrating impressive firepower, the P-39s savaged the Japanese aircraft. US fighter ace Lt. Bill Fiedler claimed several victories aboard the Airacobra. In addition to its successes in the battlefield, the Airacobra had a design considered advance for its time. The P-39 is one of the early adopters of the bubble canopy design. Inside the planeŐs ergonomic cockpit, the pilot has an unparalleled view of his surroundings, enabling easy spotting of enemy aircraft. In case of aircraft damage, the pilot can easily jettison the plane by pulling the crank handle on the window.
