Mastercraft Collection: F-82 Twin Mustang..
Wingspan: 12 inches
Length: 10 inches
The F-82 Twin Mustang was the last piston-engine powered aircraft during the 1940s. Originally intended as a long-range escort aircraft for World War II, the Twin Mustang only saw action postwar—World War II has already ended even before units of this two-seat aircraft were deployed. Nonetheless, this escort and night fighter aircraft became one of the war birds used during the Korean War. Remarkable for its double fuselage, the F-82 was powered by two counter-rotating and liquid-cooled V12 piston engines. Its design was spun from the experimental P-51 Mustangs and similar to the German aircraft Messerschmitt "Zwilling". Each fuselage is manned by pilots with two different sets of tasks—one operates the flight instruments of the aircraft while the other takes charge of relief operation. The Twin Mustang carries an assortment of guns, bombs and rockets, including a radar array under the wing. Moreover, it could fly the distance between Hawaii and New York, without stopping to refuel.
