The heavyweight bomber aircraft B17 bomber is a huge plane that runs on four engines. Developed by Boeing in the early 1930Õs for the United States Army Air Corps (now United States Air Force). Impressed with Flying Fortress B-17's design, USAAC requested just a few more modifications before deciding the aircraft combat ready. After the modifications, the Boeing B-17 airplane played a key role in World War II. The massive aircraft served as a daytime strategic bomber used against German military and industrial targets and it continued that role for the entire duration of the war. The bomber airplane earned its nickname when a Seattle reporter commented ÒWhy, itÕs a flying fortress!Ó mainly due to its sheer size. Boeing decided to name it just that.
