The SPAD, which stands for Sociˇtˇ de Production des Aˇroplanes Deperdussin, its manufactuer, was one of the most capable fighters of World War II, and one of the most-produced, with 8,472 built. The SPAD XIII featured larger wings and rudder, as well as other aerodynamic improvements. A more powerful Hispano-Suiza engine upped its performance, and a second Vickers machine gun doubled its firepower.
